The WJKA
World Karate Championships 2011

Team Coach: Sensei George Best
Assistant Coach: Paul Pendlebury
Individuals: Antony Pendlebury, Steven Pendlebury, Paul Wolstencoft,
Rachael Treadgold, Reid Cowell & Dominic Cranney.

The World Championships took place in Wevelgem, Belgium this year with a great turn out from countries all over the World.

Hasha International Karate England set off with the fittest group of athletes we've had for many a year and it was apparent in the individuals, we saw Rachael Treadgold walk out first and take 3rd Place in the women’s Kata where Rachael performed Heian Kata's first before progressing through the preliminary rounds, quarter and semi- final rounds. Now to the finals, where Rachael performed Kata Chinte, after a draw she performed Kata Sochin to take third place and become World bronze medallist in Kata.

Rachael continued her winning attitude in the women’s Kumite where she fought some strong opposition and disposed of them on the way. Rachael went from strength to strength gaining confidence each fight to became the women’s WJKA World Karate Champion 2011, what a fantastic result for Rachael and the Hasha International Karate England Team.

In the men’s Kumite we saw Paul Wolstencroft, Dom Cranney, Antony Pendlebury, Reid Cowell and Steven Pendlebury fight and win with some awesome techniques. Steven and Antony were both very unlucky and made it through to the quarter finals.

Moving onto Reid Cowell, Reid had a brilliant championship scoring some fantastic fast punch combinations gaining Ippon scores and making light work of his opponents. Reid went through his preliminary rounds, quarters and semi - final fights before meeting a very strong Congolese fighter.
Reid fought fantastically well and took 3rd place to become WJKA World bronze medallist. Well done to Reid another great performance.

Dominic Cranney & Paul Wolstencroft were both very unlucky in their fights and both fighters went out in the preliminary rounds.

I'd like to thank all our competitors for their hard work and diligent training over the last 6 months. Keep up with the training and the new drill work.
The new team has an unbelievably good rapport that was apparent to see over the weekend. Let’s keep this going as team spirit, honour and respect are paramount Oss.

Hasha International Karate England would like to thank Steve Hogan for the filming of the tournament and also thank sensei Paul Pendlebury and sensei Tony Davies for their support and assistance on the day thank you all very much for your support it was invaluable .

”come on, get on it come on”

Gichin Funakoshi
World Karate Championships 2010

Hasha International Karate England attended this year’s 18th Gichin Funakoshi World Shotokan Karate Championship 2010.
The championships were well attended with 30 countries.

Each fighter from Team GB fought commendably in the team event, but we’re beaten in the second round of the tournament.

In the Individual event each member fought with impeccable spirit and venom, again each fighter went out in the second round of the tournament this was very unfortunte.

Congratulation goes to George Best who fought well all day and took the title and became The Gichin Funakoshi World Shotokan Karate Champion 2010. Well done to all the team our focus will be on the next World Championships. Keep the same spirit, commitment and single minded approach into the next tournament.

The team consisting of George Best, Antony Pendlebury Steven Pendlebury and Dave Ward fought well all day beating the 2006 World Team Champions Serbia who were formidable opponents. The Hasha England team went on to face Spain in the semi-finals who were the eventual winners.

Antony Pendlebury and his brother Steven had great fights but were unlucky to make it through there areas. Steven was injuried which hindered his progression and due to this Steven had to retire due to his injuries.

Hasha International Karate
Training Course
April 2008

Hasha International Karate held the second of its training courses on Saturday 26th April 2008 at Total Fitness Whitefield. The emphasis of the day was on Basics, Dachi no Kata and Kata. The Basics consisted of using reverse Age Uke, Mawashi Geri, Gyaku Zuki and Soto Uke, Uchi Uke, Mae Geri and finishing with Gyaku Zuki. These techniques were performed up the Dojo and then with a partner in order to practice and perfect (Bunkai) application of technique.

Next Datchi no Kata was explained and shown to us emphasising correct use of movement before moving onto learning Kata Heian Nidan and Heian Sandan while the Brown and Black belts were taught Bassai Sho, an advanced Black Belt Kata. All Kata were broken down in very easy to follow segments which meant everyone on the course went away with learning a new Kata.

Course feedback has been overwhelming and due to this we will be holding a course every month. Funds raised will go towards the England senior and junior squad. Once again a course thoroughly enjoyed by all. “Can’t wait till the next one?”

Curam De Cara
Training Course & Grading
2007

Once again George and Ian Best were invited along with Jenny, Jordan, Saffron and Steve by there good Karate friends Liam, Teresa, Marlene and Liam Og Griffin to take a training course and grading at The Curam De Cara Karate Academy of Martial Arts, from Saturday 31st March to Sunday 1st April at the Rathpeacon GAA Hall, Planet Health Club, Ballyanly Sports Complex and Leisure World, where we were met by some very eager martial artist who wanted to train hard.

The first session saw Curam De Cara’s youth class with students who have just come back from winning a tournament in Italy. With this enthusiasm, they wanted to impress the instructors. This session was a fantastic success as all the students enjoyed the sessions. Ian and George put on a questions and answer session after the lesson where many of the youth class asked questions about techniques, training methods and the most difficult question of all “How long have you had your belt for..?” which brought the house down with much laughter.

We finished with a Gi signing at the end as many wanted autographs and the traditional course photo before moving onto the next venue.

The Ballyanly Sports Complex which is host to the Cork Kenpo Karate Club, which we were invited to train many of there students who have a lot of potential, with many of this team competing in tournaments. Some of the students asked questions about techniques, how to improve foot speed, how to develop fast kicks and how to develop good distance and timing. These were some of the questions which we answered before moving onto our next venue.

The Planet Health Club, this is one of Curam De Cara’s newest venues with a fantastic sprung wooden floor which we christened. Again the students were very attentive, and willing to learn. After this lesson, the class were privileged to see a Dan grading in which William Brown and Teresa Griffin took 1st Dan and 4th Dan. Both trained exceptionally well during the day and a close eye was kept on both as they took there grading. It was all worth while as William passed his Shodan, 1st Dan and Teresa passed her Yondan 4th Dan a fantastic achievement by both of them as they shown spirit, commitment and good knowledge of Shotokan Karate.

The fourth venue was Leisure World, a sports centre with a nice wooden floor again this is a new venue with a lot of potential, and it was a chance to see Curam De Cara’s youths perform a demonstration to many onlookers. It was extremely pleasing to see their dedication and commitment over the weeks as they practised in order to perform in front of a crowd of people. Then it was George and Ian’s turn, as they performed some breath taking take down techniques to the wow’s of the crowd.

Once again another great course well and truly enjoyed by all who attended. We all enjoyed the fantastic meal at The Planet this was a good opportunity to catch up with old and new friends. I’d like to thank the Griffin’s and the Maguire’s for a great time, and we’ll see you all again in a few months.
